iAddSubs

  1. -my solution for finally watching “Lost” with english subs

Problem 1:

Apple provides a lot of TV shows and movies

in the iTunes store. But, unfortunately, there are no

subtitles available. So if you want to enjoy this

media with subtitles, you are out of luck.

In the german iTunes store there are some shows available with hard coded german subtitle. Well, I think the hard coded subtitles are rather disturbing.

Problem 2:

Subtitles for many TV shows and movies are available on the internet. But these are unusable with the stuff bought in the iTunes store. Reason is, that the media files are protected with DRM mechanisms, and therefore only iTunes can play these files.

Solution:

iAddSubs tracks what is currently playing in iTunes. You can specify a subtitles file that fits to the media content. When resuming playing, iAddSubs will show the text specified in the subtitles file in sync with the media file currently playing. iAddSubs is using a hidden window showing the text layer above the iTunes media player. This actually works as well in fullscreen mode.

Details:

iAddSubs was designed for Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard), but should run under 10.5 too.

This is version 1.0, which is the first version to be released to the public. It’s available for free. I hope you enjoy using this application.

Feedback is highly appreciated.

Donations are accepted as well, as these will highly encourage further development.
